Unfortunately the scams have not only persisted, but have become quite convincing. stating the name of the officer that will be at your door to arrest you for unpaid taxes. The IRS continues to remind taxpayers that they will not call for a first contact. If there is a concern, the IRS will send a letter.
Unfortunately scammers have now started to send letters that look like a taxing agency claiming that there is an impending levy. If you receive a letter and you are concerned, please contact your tax professional or call the IRS at 1800-829-1040. If you believe that you may owe taxes, you can check by creating a taxpayer account with the IRS here.
Another recent scam variation involves the caller telling you that your social security number is going to be suspended.
If you receive an email, please report it to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov . If you receive a phone call from a scammer, please hang up immediately. Also take a moment to report it this link, the Treasury Inspector General and to the Federal Trade Commission here.
